We finally celebrated Clementine's first birthday, having put it all on hold while Doug was out of town. Perhaps her favorite game of the day was opening presents, one-year-old style. I got out several of the fashionable reusable Christmas boxes and put a birthday toy inside each one. She was easily able to remove the lid of each box, look inside, and pull out the toy. Most of the toys were already unwrapped and accessible (having been purchased at yardsales). Most were also musical rattle-type toys since she's very into shaking and dancing.
The best part, of course, is that the kids all helped me to re-box the gifts several times so Tiny could amble around and open them again, removing the toys and shaking them and of course making everyone cheer and laugh.
A few very special gifts were much coveted by Zoe, who actually broke down crying (with tears!) while Clementine took the first turn at holding her new baby doll. It is so tender to see my tiny girl cuddling and patting a baby doll - I guess if there's one thing she knows about in this life, it is how a baby likes to be loved. I think she knows it is her own doll, since she seeks it out of the basement full of toys and dolls.
And as for cake, Doug chose banana-creme pie instead. I am sure Tiny likes pie as well as cake. In addition, I just know that each family member snuck her a jumbo marshmallow or two (because we love watching her get excited and kick her legs and laugh...she does love marshmallows.) Perhaps her birthdays will all be commemorated with a marshmallow henceforth.
