Bernice Bobs Her Hair

We've had yet another incident of self-inflicted hair-trimming. Guy used scissors to lop of his bangs (right to the scalp), and the following night he took a chunk from the very top and two from the back. This morning we both agreed that I should try to clean it up, which meant cutting it very short all-around, even though I still wasn't able to really get the bald spots to blend in.

I asked Guy, "WHY did you cut your hair!?"
"Because yesterday at school I told everyone I was going to come back today with really short hair." He answered.
I'm wondering if he told them he was going to shave his head...
"Did you really WANT super-short hair, or did you just like TELLING everyone that you were going to get a haircut?"
"Ummm...both."

I was instantly taken back to 11th grade, when we read Bernice Bobs Her Hair, in which Bernice uses her pretended future risque bob haircut to liven up conversation with the flirty boys. However, she regrets actually having to follow through and cut her hair, which makes her unpopular again.

Ah, well. Maybe later today I'll get out the clippers and finish the job on Guy, taking him down to a fine fuzz. The moral of this story is that those Fitzgerald stories really stick in the brain.
