Memory of Guy Noir

I was just communicating with my uncle about his little daughter.  He said, "She has
surprising brute strength (and is usually unfazed by matters such as falling over backward and bonking her head on something hard), but also acutely sensitivity at times, enough to engender tears at the gentlest of touches."

His comments reminded me of a peculiar habit that Guy had, when he was 6-12 months old.  First, I'll mention that my friend Shelley referred to him as Guy Noir or Guy Smiley (both characters whom which Guy has had little exposure to, himself) based on his temperament.

And yes, although he was usually Guy Smiley, he would sometimes fly into a Guy Noir baby-rage.  If he was sitting, he would violently throw himself backwards (this was when we still had all-wood floors).  Ouch for the head!  If he was standing, he'd plop down, and THEN fling himself backward.  I really don't think he wanted to hit his head... who knows what one thinks before the logic circuits are fused.

Well, I'm proud to say that I got pretty darn good at a maneuver I refer to as "safety foot." As soon as he'd let out a scream and start leaning forward in preparation for the big hurl backward, I could leap over and accurately install my foot on the floor behind him, catching his baby head in my toes, inches before it hit the floor.

And that is why, good friends, he is brilliant today instead of brain-damaged.
