The boys had such a fun time going to The Sound Of Music at the high school a few weeks ago, that when another high school put on Into the Woods this weekend, I thought we'd go.
The first half of the show went well enough...a funnily mixed-up fairytale that seems to all come around in the end . Although... Guy was extremely worried about the scene in which the baker uses a knife to cut open the wolf's stomach so granny can pop out. It made me darn tootin' glad he hasn't seen enough violence on TV that he would be blase about such a dramatic event (and it wasn't even performed very realistically. I mean, Granny popped up from the behind the table, duh.)
Aside from that, we all liked the first half! So, then, the SECOND half of the show made me realize that I should have watched the play first before deciding whether or not to bring kiddies along. They were both terribly unhappy that almost everyone was crushed by the giant. The moral dilemmas (should we sacrifice Jack to the giant or not? Should Cinderella divorce the untrue prince? Will the baker abandon his baby?) were disconcerting. I guess I'm hoping they don't remember much of that and INSTEAD remember the giant chasing everyone.
The moral of the play is "be careful what you say...children will listen." Heck, yeah. Be careful what plays you watch, too. Children will have nightmares. Next time, we'll just go home at intermission (at which point, everyone was "happily ever after"!)

Peter and I got a hearty chuckle out of this post, especially the last paragraph. We often listen to this soundtrack (in fact, we had it on this morning), but have to be careful about a few of the tracks when the kids are about. Good luck with the giant nightmares!
