He carefully cut and organized coupons as we prepped to go, then picked items off the shelf as I called them out, organized them in the cart, chose flavors, and then put them on the checkout belt in order as I called them out. The things a boy will do for good eats! It was helpful to have him along, and definitely qualifies for some good bonding time in the category of "the activities I do with my Mom are so weird I don't think I can ever scrub them from my memory." So, that's a bonus!
We came home and took this photo of what we got for $54.41 (apparent savings of $137.58 and 72%). I say apparent savings because I think the stuff is overpriced to begin with. If I were diligent with math, I would calculate how many meals (or meal-equivalents) the $54 purchased.
Some things you see are:
24 boxes of cereal (we have to send snacks to school for the class to share, and finger cereals are the easiest)
10 boxes of gogurt (gotta admit I love it for lunchboxes)
6 4-packs of greek yogurt (and one activia)
24 cups of yoplait yogurt (easy breakfast time!)
1 box granola bars
3 dozen eggs
3 gallons milk
2 boxes of newton wafers

As we were putting stuff away, Guy clipped 20 boxtops for education off the Gogurts and collected the movie codes to enter into the computer for a promotion that will give all the kids free tickets to see the new Diary of a Wimpy Kid movie, so that's nice, too. We'll leave the boxtops for ed coupons on the cereal boxes until we eat those.
In Guy's cubscout book I think there was an achievement about budgeting and shopping, so I'm gonna go ahead and pass him off on that.
