Looking forward at 2012...and looking back at 2011: Thankgiving
Maybe 2012 will be the year I finally figure out how to make Thanksgiving a holiday that feels right for me. Right now, it is not a day I love. We didn't make the effort to go visit any family anywhere, and none of them were able to come visit us. I didn't plan out a gathering of local friends (as some motivated friends have invited me to in the past) and I didn't do a great job seeking out someone to invite. So...the small crowd existing of my nuclear family didn't feel like Thanksgiving and it made me gloomy. The meal element of the day doesn't seem different from any other day... except maybe I'm willing to put in just a little extra time. And the rest of the day... we really needed something to do to make it a special day because I wasn't feeling it.
I decided to take us all out for the Berbee Derby run. The Berbee Derby... "it's like a Thanksgiving day parade, only faster" is the slogan. D and Guy actually registered as runners, but X and I pushed the girls in the stroller. I enjoyed that this was an outdoor, sporty way to start Thanksgiving morning (a day that otherwise consists of eating and sitting around, right?). The only downsides to this event were that our family was split into two groups, experiencing the "morning grouchies" and that my group was stuck with the walkers. We were in a packed cluster of walkers for at least a mile and couldn't go faster even if we wanted to.
Then we all went back home for turkey and potatoes. Still not my favorite holiday. The bright side is that I sold that stroller the next day...so it provided us some good fun while we had it.
