LEGEND OF THE LAUNDRY FAIRY
Listen well, children, and learn here today
The legend of how your clean clothes got that way.
‘Tis the Laundry Fairy, gentle and sweet!
She collects dirty clothes for her dragon to eat.
This is a dear favor (she is not a slave),
Then she stocks up the clean stuff
In her tidy, warm, cave.
She’s happy to give back the clothes that are done,
But beware of the stockpile: TAKE ALL or TAKE NONE!
To pick through the pile to find pants or a shirt
Breaks her dear heart (and she can’t work when she’s hurt.)
So put the pile away neatly in closet and drawer,
Or to restore Fairy’s health will require extra chores.
And heed warning, dear children, of her fierce dragon pet:
He eats clothes that are dirty - he slobbers them wet.
If the food’s NOT in his food-bin (if it’s just on the floor),
He rears up in anger and won’t eat any more.
And nothing annoys more than clean clothes in his food.
“I won’t eat it,” he says, “cuz it’s already been chewed!”
And of course his best candies (those are your socks):
He needs all of his bon-bons in place in their box.
To win back his trust is not a simple feat:
You must feed him yourself each time he should eat.
Armed with your dagger and detergent and shield,
You’ll battle the dragon until he will yield.
But when you have battled and been proven true,
The Fairy again will do laundry for you.
She’s quiet and small as she flits all about.
She loves clean-smelling clothes: there’s nary a doubt.
But she mostly loves YOU and you bring her such bliss,
So sometimes say “thank you” and give her a kiss.
