Ben Folds

Last night we had the treat of tix to the Ben Folds concert (thanks, Rick!). I loved the feeling of listening to live music surrounded by thousands of others enjoying the same vibe, not something I do often unless being surrounded by lots of toddlers counts. But by far, my favorite part of the night was when:

“Army!” one guy called out while Folds was starting a song. Instead of ignoring it, Folds changed direction, launching into an improvised tune about concert etiquette.

The concert etiquette song made me crack up! I loved the fact that he was able to improvise a pretty good sounding song, with comical lyrics, and the band picked up the chords and filled it out...voila. Improv music is fun!

"You can request a song, but not in the middle of another song. That's just wrong. That's just wrong."

Ben also had the fans sing some bits of the acapella piece he was putting together, which was interesting to be part of. And when they decided to play a cover of another band, he explained that they couldn't decide what to play so they went to itunes to see what the current #1 song was, and they played that as their cover. Again, these are funny guys.

Fun times. Going out to a late night concert makes me feel like maybe I'm not completely old and boring after all. Phew.
