Gift giving is sew much fun

This year I wanted to find a way to get the kids materially involved in the giving of gifts, so I decided they could make soft flannel pillowcases for cousins. (Sorry! cousins! just spoiled the surprise!).

Tiny came with me to Jo-Ann Fabric on black Friday to choose the fabrics, then she sat in the cart with the bolts forming a roof over her head, and stayed in the fort for 2 hours while we waited to check out. Crazy!

But worth it once we got going on the sewing. Guy was the most enthusiastic and Zoe jumped on board easily. Xander claims not to enjoy this activity...typical attitude for many things this year, actually.

We had a slight issue with the Bernina 830 Record, circa 1950?, but I engineered some rubberbands to keep it chugging until I can get it in for service in January.
Breaking down:

Here's Guy, working away in the sweatshop. Friendly sweatshop.

Xander mans the iron and folding, Zoe pins, Guy sews, Clementine supervises.

Every morning Zoe sews a few seams before school. Later in the day she sews a few more after school. I have to restrain myself from just finishing it, already! But I want them to do it.

I remember when my Mama taught me how to sew a quilt from little squares, along with the Cowley girls from next door. Thanks, Mom. Perhaps that little bit gave me the confidence to sew other projects when I needed to.

This Bernina...I bought from my Gramma Lorraine before she died. I paid her $200. I'm tempted sometimes to get a new machine, but I think I will still hold on to this one. It's still an amazing worker, except the plastic bits are failing. Sometimes I look on ebay to see how much people are paying for these vintage, immortal machines....$500 today!
